Ordering X Rays
In 2003 there was correspondence between the RCN Advisor Mark Jones and the President of the Society of Radiographers and it was agreed that suitably trained Nurse Practitioners could order X Rays if locally agreed

In some areas this has been implemented, in others it has been an uphill struggle and we are still left in the silly situation of asking GP colleagues to sign X Ray request forms. The responsibility for irradiating a patient is with the Radiographer not the person ordering the X Ray which is probably why they are not altogether happy to have another group of health care professionals ordering X Rays. BUT there are no more X Rays being done, its just the signature that is different. If we are ordering investigations on patients in our care it is our responsibility, and I feel it is unfair to ask another healthcare professional to take responsibility for a patient who is not directly in their care.
We have some examples of implementation in other areas and will add to this list in due course.
